In most cases, clip-on earrings can be put on your ears easily - they're simple, convenient to use and require no piercing or any other preparation. Even so, there are a few different ways to wear non-piercing earrings.
Clip-on clamps
The most common type of closure. Clamps are usually relatively large, hinge-style clasps that open all the way.
They're easy to wear, and can be put on different parts of the ear easily. Sometimes, the clasps come together with a cushion to make sure there is no unnecessary pressure on the earlobe. Even if the earrings do not come with a cushion, often it is possible to get the cushions separately and add them to your earrings if you're experiencing any discomfort while wearing the clip-ons.
Magnetic
Those earrings are not directly connected to their backs - instead, they use a magnet within the back itself to remain fixed on the ear. To put them on, all you need to do is place the earring itself in front of the earlobe and the back of the earring on the back of the earlobe - where it will stay out of sight. With magnetic clip-on earrings, it can be difficult to tell whether they are actual earrings with a piercing or clip-ons. While not quite as popular as the hinge-style earrings, magnetic earrings are a modern alternative.
Ear cuffs
Another type of clip-ons. They can look very similar to cartilage piercings, but are much more convenient to use - simply slip them on your cartilage and wear them! They can be worn with other clip-on earring types easily, and allow you to avoid permanently piercing your cartilage.
Screw-back Clip-ons
These earrings work much like the clip-on clamps, but they have an additional screw that can be used to adjust the earring - it can be moved closer or further away from the ear as necessary. This means they remain as convenient as standard clip-on earrings, but allow you to have a little more control over how thight they close on your ear once you put them on.
Hoop Clip-ons
These earrings can look very similar to an actual piercing. They are fitted with a small spring within the closure, which can be pushed back to put the earrings on. Then, the spring presses the closure against the earlobe and keeps the earring attached to the ear - it looks almost like a real, pierced hoop earring, just without the need for pierced ears.
Clip-on Earring Material
All three types can be found in a variety of materials. While clip-on earrings are generally not the most upmarket, high end style of jewellery, they can be made of metals such as Sterling Silver and have gems set in them. Primarily though, clip-on earrings are found among fashion jewellery.
