Should you be bothered about a Hallmark? And in times where fake is the norm on the media, can I trust it?
The short answer to both of those questions is YES. You definitely should take Hallmarks serious.
For a start, it is illegal in the UK to sell an article that is made of precious metal and advertised as such without a hallmark (excpetions for tiny items do apply). So if you see some great looking 18ct gold earrings at a fantastic price, then they are probably fake and you won't find a hallmark on them.
And what about faking a hallmark? While this is not impossible (especially in times where high-tech machines cost very little), this type of fraud is extremely rare and carries hefty prison sentences.
If in doubt, you can always get your jewellery professionally tested. That's why we also encourage you to buy your jewellery within the UK, so you can always make a claim against a seller should the worst happen.
